Hayes Custom Guns

The Hayes brothers learned pistolsmithing inside their family's legendary Clark Custom Guns — then left the most famous name in bullseye to build double-stack race guns under their own.

THE MAKER

Some pistolsmiths find the trade. The Hayes brothers were born downstream of it. Their grandfather, Jim Clark Sr., founded Clark Custom Guns in 1950, a shop that became synonymous with bullseye and custom 1911 work for generations of American competitors. Aaron and Ben Hayes grew up in that world; Ben started working at Clark in 2004, at eighteen, trained under his uncle Jim Clark Jr., and rose to become the shop's head 1911 builder.

In 2012 the brothers founded Hayes Custom Guns to build their own designs — most visibly double-stack competition pistols that the family firm was never known for. Three generations in, the surname on the slide changed, but the education on the bench is the same one Clark Custom has been handing down since 1950.

THE MACHINE

The flagship is the Cobra HC1911, launched in 2023: a 9mm double-stack built for the USPSA Limited Optics division. Five-inch bull barrel, a tri-top slide — three flats machined along the top — a steel Cheely frame, and hardware chosen like a pit crew chooses tires: a Cheely E2 magwell and grip, a 2.5-pound trigger, and Nighthawk's IOS system, which lets the shooter swap between iron sights and a red-dot plate without re-zeroing the gun's personality.

Certain Hayes builds have also run on components from Phoenix Trinity — its frames and EVO grips — which makes the next dossier in this series the natural sequel: the parts maker whose catalog other race-gun builders, Hayes included, have drawn from.

THE MOMENT

Picture the family arithmetic. Grandfather starts one of America's founding custom shops in 1950. His son runs it. His grandsons sweep the floors, then run the 1911 bench — Ben as head builder — and then, at the height of that inheritance, walk out to start over under their own name, building a kind of gun the family shop never made.

That is the Hayes story: not a rejection of the Clark legacy, but its third verse. The Cobra's buyers are purchasing two things at once — a modern Limited Optics race gun, and the oldest continuously taught pistolsmithing education in the country, one family removed.
